Description

ECOSTEP is a 48-month project to develop, test, and validate an advanced ecodesign methodology for the footwear sector, addressing circularity, durability, and social sustainability across the full value chain. The project will deliver an AI-based tool integrating Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA), predictive modelling, and Digital Product Passport (DPP) functionalities to evaluate ecodesign requirements and establish standardised methodologies for performance verification. At least six footwear products will be analysed to identify priority raw materials for circular substitution and to validate new testing methods that enhance durability, reparability, recyclability, and biodegradability. ECOSTEP will also provide digital platforms, tools, and tailored training modules to support SMEs, manufacturers, and policymakers in implementing ecodesign principles and achieving compliance with the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Through collaborative validation and stakeholder engagement, the project will ensure usability and scalability of its results, ultimately delivering a standardised assessment framework that improves environmental performance, enhances data quality and transparency, and accelerates the adoption of circular economy practices in the European footwear industry.
