Description

The evolving global landscape marks the voluntary responsibility of companies to uphold human rights and environmental protection across their operations and value chains through a due diligence approach to Responsible Business Conduct. However, VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) conditions challenge their ability to address social, environmental, and technological issues. The new EU Due Diligence Directive marks a legislative shift, redefining how businesses address adverse impacts, and researchers, practitioners, and policymakers must collaborate in advancing the transition from voluntary to mandatory due diligence disclosure. Our project aims to create a research network to develop agile, risk-based due diligence strategies for managing risks across value chains, operations, and business relationships. By addressing challenges in obtaining meaningful due diligence information reflecting global complexity and uncertainty, it seeks to enhance risk management and decision-making. The objectives of the research:1)Examine the complexity of supply chains in VUCA contexts and explore the cultural and organisational dynamics that strengthen risk-based due diligence.2) Investigation of transnational practices to collect, manage, and utilise cross-functional data on adverse human rights and environmental impacts to improve risk management systems.3) Develop adaptive risk-based strategies in VUCA contexts to address negative impacts across business operations and value chains, ensuring meaningful due diligence and informed decision-making.The project will go beyond the current debate, advance theoretical and practical knowledge, combining international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration to develop context-sensitive risk-based strategies for human rights and environmental impacts in VUCA markets. This is essential for fostering resilience, charting the landscape for improved Responsible Business Conduct and long-term competitiveness.
