Description
MOBI-DEEP will deliver a complete evidence-to-policy pipeline for monitoring inter-sectoral research careers in Europe, shifting the focus from counting mobility events to understanding and improving mobility quality and its systemic effects on innovation. The project develops and validates three core instruments – a Mobility Quality Index (MQI), a Career Interoperability Maturity Model (CIMM), and an ERA-ready indicator set – which together fill critical gaps in the European Research Area’s analytical infrastructure and are explicitly designed for integration with the Research and Innovation Careers Observatory (ReICO).Built on a robust conceptual foundation (Career Logics Framework and Theory of Change), MOBI-DEEP combines systematic evidence synthesis with large-scale multi-country surveys (1,500 researchers), 80+ stakeholder interviews, 12+ organisational case studies, and bibliometric/network analysis of knowledge flows in deep-tech and a non-deep-tech comparison sector. This multi-method design generates new knowledge on private-sector research careers, inter-sectoral mobility pathways, and the role of organisational and national contexts, with particular attention to Widening countries and gendered/intersectional barriers. The resulting tools are co-designed and validated with ERA monitoring experts and national statistics actors, stress-tested across sectors and country types, and mapped to ReICO’s taxonomy to ensure immediate policy relevance and interoperability with existing ERA infrastructures. Through targeted policy analysis, context-specific scenarios, and ERA-integrated dissemination, MOBI-DEEP will provide policymakers, research-performing organisations, and industry with actionable instruments to strengthen talent circulation, support attractive and inclusive research careers, and enhance Europe’s innovation capacity
