Description

LIFE-WIND addresses a key challenge of the European energy transition: understanding and managing the impacts of large-scale offshore wind deployment on marine ecosystems and socio-economic activities, including cumulative, regionalised and transboundary effects, while enhancing positive outcomes and minimising adverse impacts. The project moves beyond fragmented offshore wind assessments by delivering an integrated, life-cycle-based approach for cumulative impact assessment that captures temporal dynamics, cross-sector interactions and accelerating deployment at regional scale.LIFE-WIND establishes a harmonised social-ecological framework integrating environmental, socio-economic and governance dimensions across the offshore wind life cycle. It advances multi-pressure monitoring and coupled modelling, combining ecological models with system dynamics modelling to represent feedback loops, time lags and trade-offs between ecosystem change, ecosystem services and socio-economic drivers. These components are integrated into an operational cumulative impact assessment and Decision Support Tool to evaluate risks, thresholds, knowledge certainty and mitigation options under alternative deployment pathways. Selected monitoring and mitigation solutions are demonstrated and validated under representative conditions, achieving TRL 5 by the end of the project.A coordinated multi-site design across the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea ensures testing, validation and regional adaptation under diverse ecological and governance contexts. Structured engagement with authorities, industry, civil society and other maritime stakeholders ensures usability and uptake in MSP and permitting. By embedding results within European data infrastructures and regional governance processes, LIFE-WIND delivers scalable and transferable solutions for responsible and sustainable offshore wind deployment across European seas.
