Description
BEAGLE is a transformative, policy-oriented research initiative designed to deliver next-generation biodiversity monitoring across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems in the EU and Associated Countries. Named after Darwin’s iconic ship, BEAGLE addresses the urgent need for high-resolution, harmonised, and FAIR-compliant biodiversity data to support the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the Nature Restoration Regulation, and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The project integrates cutting-edge technologies—including automated sensors, eDNA sampling, AI, and participatory science—to generate raw data including up to one billion species occurrence records. These data will be processed through robust, scalable pipelines to produce Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and policy-relevant indicators. BEAGLE’s layered approach ensures comprehensive spatial, temporal, and taxonomic coverage, with a strong focus on underrepresented taxa and ecosystems. BEAGLE is structured around four core objectives: (1) strengthening the EU’s biodiversity monitoring network, (2) operationalising high-throughput in situ observation tools, (3) integrating validated data into open platforms and modelling workflows, and (4) developing a knowledge framework to support ecosystem recovery. The project will mobilise legacy data, deploy over one thousand sensors, collect thousands of eDNA samples, and engage millions of citizens through participatory platforms like Pl@ntNet and MINKA. With a consortium of 17 partners across Europe, BEAGLE combines interdisciplinary expertise in ecology, AI, bioinformatics, and policy. Its outputs will empower policymakers, researchers, businesses, and civil society to track biodiversity trends, evaluate restoration outcomes, and design nature-positive strategies. By embedding open science and sustainability principles, BEAGLE sets a new benchmark for integrated, scalable, and policy-relevant biodiversity monitoring in Europe.
